Before we grew our own garlic we had never heard of scapes. Today we cut a bunch of them from our hardneck garlic plants; and I think there’s another 3 or 4 meals worth left. Some ways to enjoy them: garlic scape pesto, stir fried with veggies, or raw and sliced thinly in a salad.
Garlic has really turned out to be a winner in our garden: you can plant them quite densely, which is important when space is at premium; they look pretty with their spiky, dark green leaves; and as an added bonus there are the scapes to be enjoyed en route to the actual garlic harvest. Most importantly, slugs don’t like them. We’ll definitely be planting garlic again in the fall.
