Last year we acquired a food dehydrator. We splurged on the top-of-the-line Excalibur and haven’t regretted it. A forced air dehydrator definitely is the way to go (as compared to convection models); and the big 9 tray model is not excessive if you’re even a little serious about dehydrating. And why wouldn’t you be? – It’s such a versatile method of preservation.
Some of the things that we’ve dehydrated successfully:
- apples, pears
- plums
- figs
- tomatoes
- seeds
- kefir crystals
- herbs: sage, lemon balm, spearmint, oregano
- garlic
- bananas, oranges
And that’s just getting started. We’re looking forward to dehydrating grapes, cherries, peaches, and much more.
