Shortly after completing my bat house project I stumbled on a much better design. It happened quite serendipitously while strolling through the Seattle Flower and Garden show. It’s called a Rocket Box and was apparently the result of a bat study done right here in the Pacific North-West.
It offers more habitat choices within a single enclosure; it’s very easy to build; thanks to its small cross-section it stands up better to wind and weather; and it blends in much better than the traditional flat box that is recommended on all the bat conservation sites.
I have no doubt this design will soon displace the conventional box. In fact I just recently saw a couple of them along a stretch of the Sammamish River currently being renaturalized.
