This weekend we visited the Bullock brothers’ permaculture homestead on Orcas island. We attended a 3 day intro to permaculture workshop; but really we just wanted to see the place, having heard so much about it.
It more than lived up to our expectations. The gardens are beautiful and the diversity of plants and plant communities is amazing. The brothers have worked for over 30 years to establish this permaculture site, collecting many rare and unusual plants that are particularly suited to the local climate and specific niches in this grand design.
The place is maintained impeccably by a large crew of interns; but it looks very natural. The transition from intensively gardened areas to orchards, wet lands, and forest is almost imperceptible and presents a model of people living and working in harmony with nature.
The photos will give you an impression of the place – but you really must experience it in order to fully appreciate it.
